We are the Johns Family and we are originally from Hanceville, Alabama. We (David & Gretta) were both born, raised, married, and started our family in Alabama and we are huge Alabama Crimson Tide football fans. We have been married since January 1, 2000 and God has blessed us with 3 amazing children. Abbey is 16 years old and in the 10th grade, Sidney is 13 years old and in the 8th grade and Wyatt is 11 years old and in the 6th grade. We have been homeschooling for 6 years. In 2010, we felt the Lord leading us into full-time mission work and ministry and we wanted to be obedient to God and take His name to the nations. Our passion is for taking the gospel and the name of Jesus Christ into foreign lands and sharing the gospel, planting churches, training national pastors, and working with children who will be the future generations of churches.
In 1997 and 1998, Gretta served in Voronezh, Russia and Irkutsk, Siberia in mission work and she had grown up in a Christian home with a heart for mission work. In 2011, we had the opportunity to go to Peru together with a team from our church in Alabama and work alongside friends who are IMB missionaries in Peru. In the summer of 2012, we moved to Los Fresnos, Texas (at the Texas-Mexico border) to attend The Center for Pioneer Church Planting and join the missions organization, To Every Tribe. This 2 year program equipped us to take the gospel throughout the world, we learned the necessary skills to communicate the gospel to diverse cultures and people groups, and how to effectively plant churches among unreached people groups including in hostile and remote locations of the world. Over that 2 years, we also served in a remote village in Mexico each month where we did oral bible storying, discipleship, held worship services, did door-to-door evangelism and home Bible studies, and developed relationships with the local people in that village. In May 2014, we graduated from The Center for Pioneer Church Planting. While our hearts were focused on "going to the nations", the Lord had other plans for our lives. Proverbs 19:21 became so clear to us in the months leading up to graduation.
The Lord opened a door for us to take a stateside missions assignment in the area we had been living the last 2 years. Los Fresnos, Texas is situated just a few miles from the Texas-Mexico border. It is a very bilingual area and the need for missions and ministry is great here. David was offered a two-fold assignment as a Student Minister (for Kindergarten - 12th grade students) and a missions mobilizer to help start new mission work and evangelism/outreach projects in the local community with a small Baptist church here at the border. We served in this capacity for 3 years and the Lord greatly blessed the work there.
In January 2016, our entire family went to Roatan, Honduras along with our pastor and his wife to do a mission trip and scouting trip. We had heard that there was a huge need for leadership training, for someone to work with the youth and kids, and they were asking for missionaries to come live and work there on the island. After spending time serving there, we too felt the urgency of the need for mission work there. We came home and discussed this opportunity with our church leadership and after much prayer, made the decision to follow the Lord's calling to Roatan, Honduras.
We were accepted with the missions organization, Reaching & Teaching (www.reachingandteaching.org) and appointed as Field Missionaries to Honduras. We are now raising support to move to Honduras in August 2017. We have committed to live there for 3 years before ever returning to the States. We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for our family as we continue following the Lord in a life of mission work. We appreciate your prayers and support!
